Wheat production and prices are down in recent Texas A&M AgriLife report

TEXAS (KAUZ) - According to a recent Texas A&M AgriLife report, wheat producers may be in a tough position due to drought right now.
AgriLife said last year, the drought index was improving, but this year, conditions are worsening as the wheat crop is breaking dormancy and starting reproductive growth.
Producers will need to decide whether to abandon the idea of going to grain and leave cattle to graze wheat or manage it as wheatlage, which is growing in popularity where water is available. AgriLife said others will likely abandon the acreage and move on to the next crop if losses are extreme.
Texas A&M AgriLife also reported that the market prices are down for wheat crops, with the cash price sitting at around $4.85 per bushel this past week compared to $5 per bushel a year ago.
The low prices could be an effect of the poor wheat conditions. AgriLife Extension agronomists said they are starting to see varying signs of drought stress on the wheat crop.
Dry fall conditions in some areas after planting, along with some very cold periods in January and February, resulted in delayed crop development compared to last year.
More details on the conditions of wheat production throughout Texas can be found in the Texas A&M AgriLife report by Kay Ledbetter.
