Amarillo police: 1 dead, several injured after shooting on Polk Street
AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) - Amarillo police say a shooting outside a nightclub on Polk Street early Sunday morning left one man dead and several injured.
At 2:05 a.m. on Jan. 26, officials received multiple 911 calls reporting a shooting outside a nightclub on S. Polk Street.
Police say witnesses reported a vehicle approaching the nightclub entrance, where a suspect exited and opened fire with a rifle into a large crowd before fleeing in the vehicle.
A citizen followed the suspects and provided critical information to 911, enabling Randall County Sheriff’s deputies to intercept the vehicle near Hillside and Bell Street.
Three people were apprehended and taken to the Amarillo Police Department’s Homicide Division for further questioning.
Police say nine people sustained gunshot wounds in the attack. Police, firefighters, and paramedics provided immediate medical assistance.
Six victims were transported to local hospitals, while three arrived via private vehicles.
Police say 25-year-old John Love Louima succumbed to his injuries and died at the hospital.
The other victims remain in various stages of recovery.
Police say the shooter, identified as 23-year-old Robert Kenney Knox, and the driver, 21-year-old Nahryah Hilesta Ines Hayes, face charges of murder and eight counts of deadly conduct/discharge of a firearm.
Both Knox and Hayes were booked into the Potter County Detention Center.
A third passenger, 22-year-old Britt Brinson Cave, was charged with public intoxication and booked into Randall County Detention Center.
Police say officers and deputies recovered a firearm, shell casings, and other evidence likely connected to the shooting.
Preliminary findings suggest the incident stemmed from an earlier altercation inside the bar.
Detectives are actively investigating and seek community assistance.
